Książka ‘The City is Ours’ wydane niedawno w PM Press jest próbą pokazania historii skłotingu w Europie: w Londynie, Barcelonie, Berlinie, Wiedniu, Amsterdamie, Kopenhadze i innych miastach.
Książka opisuje historie największych skłotów, w niektórych przypadkach od lat 60-tych XX wieku, po 2012 przez pryzmat rozwoju ruchów autonomistycznych. Podstawowymi pytaniami jakie stawiają autorzy to – oprócz kwestii związanych z historią poszczególnych miejsc – czy istnieją narodowe charakterystyki skłotingu? jaką rolę pełnią skłoty w miastach? z kim skłotersi wchodzą w relacje i z kim współpracują?
Prezentowane jest także podejście władz do skłotersów: od represji po próby kooptacji. Skłotersi przedstawieni są jako awangarda ruchów walczących z gentryfikacją i odgórnie sterowaną rewitalizacją ale także jako zaplecze dla radykalnych ruchów ekologicznych, lub protestów przeciwko cięciom budżetowym.

O redaktorach:
Bart van der Steen studiował historię na Uniwersytecie w Leiden i zrobił doktorat w Europejskim Instytucie Uniwersyteckim we Florencji. Obszary jego badań koncentrowały się na zagadnieniach: radykalnych ruchów pracowniczych, radykalnej filozofii i powojennych ruchów społecznych. Publikował w języku niderlandzkim na temat radykalnych ruchów pracowniczych i niemieckim na temat filozofii Butlera, Negri i Žižka. Obecnie pracuje nad studium porównawczym ruchu skłoterskiego i autonomicznych ruchów w Amsterdamie i Hamburgu. Ostatnio ukończył monografię o historii holenderskiego trockizmu.

Ask jest działaczem w sieciach kopenhaskich aktywistów i angażuje się w radykalną politykę od początku roku 2000 – w działaniach i kampaniach przeciwko uszczelnianiu granic, gentryfikacji czy cięciom budżetowym. Od 2010 roku jest również członkiem projektu Squatting Europa Kollective. Obecnie Ask pracuje nad zbiorowym projektem wydawniczym na temat anarchizmu w Skandynawii i serii zinów na temat autonomicznych strategii oporu.
Leendert van Hoogenhuijze studiował historię na Uniwersytecie w Leiden i jest współredaktorem holenderskiego rocznika Kritiek.

Meeting with editors of the book ‘The City Is Ours: Squatting and Autonomous Movements in Europe from the 1970s to the Present ’ – Bart van der Steen, Ask Katzeff & Leendert van Hoogenhuijz
Squatters and autonomous movements have been in the forefront of radical politics in Europe for nearly a half-century—from struggles against urban renewal and gentrification, to large-scale peace and environmental campaigns, to spearheading the antiausterity protests sweeping the continent.
Through the compilation of the local movement histories of eight different cities—including Amsterdam, Berlin, and other famous centers of autonomous insurgence along with underdocumented cities such as Poznan and Athens—The City Is Ours paints a broad and complex picture of Europe’s squatting and autonomous movements.
Each chapter focuses on one city and provides a clear chronological narrative and analysis accompanied by photographs and illustrations. The chapters focus on the most important events and developments in the history of these movements. Furthermore, they identify the specificities of the local movements and deal with issues such as the relation between politics and subculture, generational shifts, the role of confrontation and violence, and changes in political tactics.

About the Editors:
Bart van der Steen studied history at Leiden University and wrote his PhD at the European University Institute in Florence, where he studied the squatter and autonomous movements in Amsterdam and Hamburg during the 1980s. In 2012, he finished his PhD thesis, titled Between Street Fight and Stadtguerrilla: The Autonomous Movement in Amsterdam and Hamburg During the 1980s.
Ask Katzeff studied at Copenhagen University, where he specialized in the politics and practice of the alterglobalization movement. He is coeditor of the journals Arbejderhistorie and Øjeblikket and currently works as a PhD researcher at Copenhagen University, focusing on the interaction between urban development and squatting in Europe from the 1970s onward.
Leendert van Hoogenhuijze studied history at Leiden University and is coeditor of the Dutch socialist annual Kritiek.
